RED TRUCK

Nine months together. Nine months apart.

Davlyn thought time would heal her broken heart. Instead, she's the woman parked outside his apartment at 2 a.m., engine off, telling herself she's better than this. She's the woman who ends up in the same grocery aisle as his new girlfriend before she realizes she's crossed a line. She knows exactly how far gone she is. She just doesn't know how to stop.

But now, most evenings, there's the truck. A faded red pickup parked in her condo complex that she'd never noticed before.

Leaning against it is a man who offers a small wave that asks for nothing. She doesn't know his name yet. But some nights, the sight of that truck in its usual spot is the only thing that makes her feel like there might still be something worth hoping for.

STATUS: In Progress

The Story

Davlyn built a life nobody expected her to have.

She became a mother at sixteen and spent the next twenty-one years proving everyone wrong, building a career, creating a home, and raising a daughter she couldn't be prouder of. But when that daughter finally leaves home, the silence left behind is louder than Davlyn ever imagined.

A chance meeting puts her in a relationship with Ryan, and for a while, he fills that silence completely. Then, one day, he doesn't.

Nine months later, Davlyn discovers that the hardest challenge of her life wasn't becoming a teenage mother. It was getting over a man who had already moved on. She knows she's holding onto something that's over. She just can't seem to convince her heart to let go.

Then a faded red truck starts showing up outside her condo, and a stranger she's never spoken to slowly becomes the one part of her evening she looks forward to. A familiar face. A simple wave. Little by little, tomorrow begins to feel different from today. His steady presence reminds her of something she'd forgotten: healing doesn't always happen the way we imagine and it rarely arrives all at once.

Davlyn isn't sure she's ready to want something new. She isn't even sure she can trust herself to know the difference between healing and simply filling the silence again. But for the first time in nine months, she no longer dreads tomorrow quite as much as she did yesterday.

Meet the Characters

Davlyn

When Davlyn became pregnant at 16, she spent the next two decades proving every low expectation about that wrong. While others assumed she'd never recover from becoming a teenage mother, Davlyn quietly built the life she wanted instead. She put herself through college, built a successful career in banking, bought her own home, and never missed the moments that mattered most. From parent-teacher conferences and choir concerts to college tours and graduation her life revolved around raising Kailey.

Discipline, hard work, and showing up became the foundation of everything she built. By the time Kailey graduated college and moved in with her boyfriend, Davlyn had accomplished something few people thought possible. She had raised a confident, successful daughter while creating a life she was proud of.

Then the house went quiet.

Ryan filled that silence for a while. He made her feel wanted again, not as anyone's mother or the dependable one who always had everything under control, but simply as herself. When he left, it wasn't only heartbreak. It was the return of a silence she thought she'd already made peace with, and the realization that this time, it felt entirely different.

Ryan

Ryan arrives in Davlyn's life at exactly the moment she's wondering who she is now that motherhood is no longer the center of it. Easy to talk to and impossible to forget, he reminds her there's still a woman beneath the responsibilities that have defined her for so many years. With him, she isn't someone's mother or the dependable one who always has everything under control. She's simply Davlyn.

Warm, charismatic, and easy to fall for, he becomes the center of a future Davlyn never saw coming. Whether he intended to or not, he changes the course of her life simply by being part of it.

But when the relationship no longer works for Ryan, he doesn't yell. He doesn't make scenes. He simply reaches a point where he's done. There isn't one explosive moment to replay, no dramatic betrayal to explain away. Just the quiet certainty that someone who once loved Davlyn no longer does. And for her, that certainty proves far more difficult to survive than anger ever could.

Kailey

Kailey is, without question, Davlyn's greatest accomplishment. Kailey grew up watching her mother work tirelessly to build a life most people believed was out of reach. Every sacrifice, every late night, every difficult decision was made with Kailey at the center of it.

Now a college graduate living with her boyfriend, Bradley, Kailey has built a life of her own. She loves her mother deeply and has never taken those sacrifices for granted. In many ways, she sees her mom as the strongest person she knows.

As Kailey settles into adulthood, she's no longer close enough to see the quiet loneliness that has crept into her mother's life. She knows her mom is hurting after the breakup with Ryan, but she has no idea how deeply she's lost herself or how important she'll become in helping her mom remember who she was all along.

Inspiration For This Novel

The spark for Red Truck came while listening to a podcast interview with Mel Robbins and her daughter, Sawyer. They talked openly about her daughter's first heartbreak. How impossible it felt to move on, how her family watched her struggle, and how helpless it can be to watch someone you love try to put themselves back together after a relationship ends.

It made me realize that we don't often talk honestly about the quiet kind of heartbreak that happens after one person has moved on and the other is left wondering why they can't. The kind that lingers long after everyone expects you to be "over it." The kind that slowly changes how you think, how you see yourself, and sometimes even the choices you make.

I wanted to explore what that kind of grief does to an ordinary person, but I also wanted to write about what comes after it. The slow, unglamorous work of finding your way back to yourself.

Around that same time, a faded red truck started appearing outside my condo. Almost every evening, we seemed to arrive home at the same time. I never actually met the neighbor who drove it. He simply offered a small wave before heading inside.

There was something quietly hopeful about that simple act of kindness and small acknowledgment at the end of the day. Iit made me wonder:

What if healing begins with something so small we almost miss it?

That question became Red Truck.

One of My Favorite Moments

My favorite moment, so far, comes when Davlyn realizes that she's spent exactly as much time grieving the relationship as she spent living it.

That single realization changed the way she sees her own heartbreak and became one of my favorite scenes to write.  Until then, she'd treated those nine months as proof she should have been "over it" by now. Slowly she is reminded that healing doesn't happen on a schedule.

To me, that moment captures what this novel is really about. We often judge ourselves for how long healing takes, forgetting that love leaves its own timeline behind. Davlyn's journey isn't about getting over someone as quickly as possible. It's about learning that healing isn't something we can force and that sometimes the hardest person to forgive is ourselves.

What I Love About This Story

I love this story because almost everyone understands what it feels like to lose someone they weren't ready to let go of. Heartbreak isn't unique. It's one of the most universal experiences we share, and I wanted to write a book that stayed inside that feeling honestly, without rushing past the messy, humiliating parts to get to the healing.

But more than that, I love this story because it gave me the chance to show Davlyn something she doesn't yet know about herself. She's already survived so much more than a breakup. She just can't see that strength in herself while she's standing in the middle of this particular heartbreak.

Watching her rediscover it became my favorite part of writing this novel. She rebuilt her life once when she was sixteen. This story is about watching her realize she can do it again.

Status Updates

  • Current Status: 42 pages written. Red Truck wasn't a story I planned to start writing. One Saturday morning, I sat down intending to jot down a a few ideas before I forgot them. By the end of the weekend, I'd written forty-two pages. Davlyn's story simply kept flowing.. I cannot wait until I can get back to this and give my full attention to Davlyn.
